Poetry and Creative Writing Kent - group gathered under a tarp in woodland

What Is Woodland Creative Writing?

Our woodland creative writing sessions use the natural environment as inspiration and setting. You will write poetry, prose and creative pieces guided by experienced facilitators, surrounded by the sights, sounds and atmosphere of the Kent woodland. The campfire, the trees, the wildlife - all become your muse.

No writing experience is needed. These sessions are about finding your authentic voice, not producing polished literature. We use prompts, exercises and the natural environment to unlock creativity. Some participants are experienced writers; many have never written creatively before. Everyone finds something meaningful.

Why Write in the Kent Woodland?

There is something about the natural environment that unlocks creativity in ways a desk or classroom never can. The fresh air, the rustle of leaves, the crackle of the campfire - these sensory experiences ground you in the present moment and open creative channels you may not know you had.

Our Kent woodland at Cudham Shaws provides the perfect inspirational setting. Being close to London makes it an accessible creative escape. Many participants are amazed at what they produce in a few hours of guided writing in the woods. It is restorative, creative and genuinely transformative.

A wonderful day getting back to nature, having fun and learning new skills. I brought my 9 year old and even though she was the only child the whole group was so welcoming to her and we both had a blast! We'll definitely go again.

What a day! I can't recommend this event enough. We had 6h of back to back activities and every single one was exemplary. James and his team are so down to earth, knowledgeable and fun. My abs hurt from laughing for 6h straight! I honestly cannot recommend this enough, incredible value and a day I will remember forever! Do yourself a favour and book!!!

Awesome atmosphere, great escape from day to day challenges. Instructors are well educated in many fields of life, literally knowledgeable about everything you could possibly think of asking. Most important it's great fun and you really feel like a member of great family, couldn't recommend that more to everyone who is looking to spark their life with new adventures. Best of all you can bring your kids with you as well, what a great opportunity for me and my son to spend a great quality time together! I look forward to next event!

Poetry & Creative Writing FAQs

Not at all. These sessions are for everyone, regardless of writing experience. Many participants have never written creatively before. The focus is on finding your authentic voice and enjoying the creative process, not producing perfect literature.
Just bring yourself and something to write with - a notebook and pen, or whatever you prefer. We provide guidance, prompts and the inspirational setting. Wear comfortable outdoor clothing suitable for the weather.
Yes. Children often have wonderful natural creativity, and the woodland environment unlocks it beautifully. We adapt the exercises for younger participants. It is a lovely family activity that encourages expression and connection with nature.
Sharing is entirely optional. We create a safe, non-judgemental space where you can share if you want to, but there is no pressure. Some participants share eagerly; others prefer to keep their work private. Both are completely fine.
We explore various forms: poetry (free verse and structured), prose, nature writing, and reflective journaling. The exercises are designed to unlock creativity and use the natural environment as inspiration. You might write a poem about the campfire, a story set in the woods, or a personal reflection.
