What Are Command Tasks?

Command tasks are structured problem-solving challenges inspired by military leadership training. A team is given a scenario, a set of limited resources, a clear objective and a time limit. The team must plan, communicate, allocate roles and execute under pressure. Success requires leadership, teamwork and clear thinking.

At our Kent site, command tasks take place in the natural woodland environment, adding terrain, weather and physical challenges to the mental puzzle. Each task is debriefed: what worked, what failed, who emerged as a leader, how communication broke down or excelled. The learning is immediate and applicable.

Why Do Command Tasks in Kent?

Command tasks are one of the most effective leadership development activities we offer. They create genuine pressure, reveal team dynamics, and produce real insights about communication, leadership and problem-solving. The outdoor woodland environment adds authenticity and immersion.

Our Kent site at Cudham Shaws is easily accessible from London and the South East, making it ideal for corporate leadership programmes, management away days and team development events. The natural setting strips away workplace norms and reveals authentic team behaviour.

Outdoor Team Building in Kent

Command Tasks is not just a standalone skill - it is one of the most effective team building activities we run at our Kent woodland. When a group works together to achieve a shared outdoor goal, barriers come down fast. People who have never met are suddenly communicating, problem-solving and supporting each other in ways that simply do not happen in an office or conference room.

The real magic happens when you combine activities. Imagine your team mastering fire lighting in the morning, building shelters after lunch, then gathering around a campfire to cook dinner together. That is a full day of shared achievement that bonds a group like nothing else. We can build a bespoke programme that weaves multiple activities into one epic woodland experience tailored to your team, your goals and your budget.

A wonderful day getting back to nature, having fun and learning new skills. I brought my 9 year old and even though she was the only child the whole group was so welcoming to her and we both had a blast! We'll definitely go again.

What a day! I can't recommend this event enough. We had 6h of back to back activities and every single one was exemplary. James and his team are so down to earth, knowledgeable and fun. My abs hurt from laughing for 6h straight! I honestly cannot recommend this enough, incredible value and a day I will remember forever! Do yourself a favour and book!!!

Awesome atmosphere, great escape from day to day challenges. Instructors are well educated in many fields of life, literally knowledgeable about everything you could possibly think of asking. Most important it's great fun and you really feel like a member of great family, couldn't recommend that more to everyone who is looking to spark their life with new adventures. Best of all you can bring your kids with you as well, what a great opportunity for me and my son to spend a great quality time together! I look forward to next event!

Command Tasks FAQs

No. While command tasks are excellent for corporate leadership development, they are also great for youth groups, sports teams, families with older children and any group wanting to develop teamwork and problem-solving skills. We adapt the difficulty for each group.
Not at all. Command tasks are primarily mental challenges that involve some physical activity in the woodland. They are designed to be inclusive and accessible. The challenge is in the thinking, communication and leadership, not physical exertion.
After each task, our facilitators lead a structured debrief. We discuss what the team did well, what could improve, who led and how, communication patterns, and how the lessons apply to real-world teamwork. The debrief is where the real learning happens.
Individual command tasks typically run 20-30 minutes each, including briefing, execution and debrief. A command tasks session usually includes 3-5 different scenarios. It is often combined with other activities in a full-day programme.
Yes. We design command tasks around your objectives: leadership development, communication, problem-solving, or team integration. We can also create scenarios that mirror workplace challenges. Discuss your goals with us when booking.
